Aaron Gilbert Fowler wanted his ma to be happy, so he resigned himself to her marriage to the Reverend Massey. Unfortunately, the reverend’s bratty daughter, Serenity, was part of the package. But these were the least of Aaron’s worries. Times were hard and he didn’t know how they were going to make the mortgage payments on the farm. They could lose the land that his pa had loved so much. Then, his Granny Bates told him about a family treasure that his great-grandpa had hidden during the Civil War. Filled with hope, Aaron vowed to find the treasure and save the farm.
Aaron Fowler, age twelve, hasn’t begun to get over his father’s death–in a freak accident that Aaron feels responsible for–when his mother remarries, to the new pastor, Jacob. Aaron takes this with bad grace and has little patience for his new sibling, Serenity, but these petty concerns are overshadowed by looming financial disaster and the likely loss of the family farm.
Then his Grandmother dies, but before she does, she reveals the secret of a treasure buried somewhere on the property during the Civil War. Aaron hopes to find the treasure and keep the farm from foreclosure, but hasn’t a clue where to look.
This is a warm-hearted growing-up story from a more innocent time. Aaron must deal with grief, loss, sibling rivalry, and the first stirrings of love. Will he find the treasure? Will he ever make peace with his step-father, Jacob? You’ll have to read the book to find out. It’s enjoyable reading. Author Grace Looper likes people and it shows in her writing. Maybe it would have been better with a good villain, but no, everyone in Hidden Treasure is basically good.
