Warm-Hearted Coming Of Age, July 19, 2009
By Louis N. Gruber “Author of Jay”
In the third volume of the trilogy that began with Molasses Making Time, Aaron Fowler is nineteen years old, beginning to find himself as a man, with big plans for the farm, and a new girlfriend, Melissa. Everything changes when the Japanese attack Pearl Harbor and Aaron decides to enlist in the Navy.
The story follows Aaron and his family through painful separations, self-doubt, fear, and dark days on a battleship. Aaron is tested as never before, always wondering if he will have sufficient courage in the ultimate test.
Author Grace Looper writes with warm-hearted but believable affection for her characters, their sufferings and joys, their painful separations and happy reunions, culminating in Aaron’s wedding. Maybe it’s a bit sentimental at times, but always enjoyable. I ended the book wishing there were more. Author Looper has done prodigious research about World War II and the Navy which gives the book a feeling of authenticity.
This is a great coming-of-age story for young adults. I enjoyed it thoroughly and recommend it highly. Reviewed by Louis N. Gruber.
